Bert Albert Catchpole was born in Thetford on 16th May 1908,(Thetford Q2-1908 4B:343), 3rd son of Amos and Maria CATCHPOLE (née LINGWOOD) of Brandon.

1911 census...Aged 2, he was at No.7 Star Lane, Brandon with his father Amos CATCHPOLE [39] labourer born Hessett; his mother Maria [38] born Brandon; sister Florence May [12] born Brandon; brothers Frederick Walter [7] and William Ernest [5] both born in Thetford.

In the 1939 register, at 200 London Road, Brandon, were his parents Amos Catchpole [22-3-1870] dyke drainer-Ouse Drainage Board and Maria [2-11-1873]. There are no closed records

Probate put his address at 200 London Road, Brandon.

He was captured on 15th February 1942 when Singapore was surrendered to the Japanese. The Suffolk were fighting to the last minute in the region of Mount Pleasant.

His Japanese PoW card gives his occupation as "batman to RAF" and on another form as "Valet". Originally buried in Kanburi No.1 cemetery, he was moved to the War Cemetery on 17th January 1946
